That’ll do pig, that’ll do

Oh, the dog days of summer. The days you find yourself wishing for cooler weather but not wanting to see winter arrive. Or in the case of our dogs at the shelter, wondering if the heat is making them imagine things. You can see it in their faces as I get Andy the pig out of his kennel and into the play yard. The utter disbelief that this strange creature is living amongst them. Andy takes it all in stride.

He is totally confident in his pigness. He knows he is a handsome, dashing, debonair ambassador of a porcine pet. He often stops to say hello (or snort) to his neighbors, and I think he is slowly winning them over with his charm.

Andy arrived at the shelter a week ago and became a staff favorite. He outgrew life in an apartment, and his family entrusted us with finding him a home where he has more space and the company of other animals.

At one and half years old, Andy weighs 50 pounds. By the age of three, his weight will most likely double. Therefore, when considering a “teacup” pig as a pet, you need to be prepared for a much bigger family member.

Andy also requires a proper diet to remain healthy, regular veterinary care, and plenty of mental stimulation. Pigs are extremely smart and love to be challenged. From hide and seek rooting games to playing ball, he needs someone to keep him active and engaged. As with most animals, boredom can lead to naughtiness.

Andy is hoping for a home that allows him to be both indoors and outdoors. He is a tidy guy and has been both litter box and outdoor potty-trained.
