Maisie’s Story – Why you should adopt an adult cat!
When I decided to adopt, I was dead set on getting a kitten. Not just because kittens are adorable, but because I didn’t think I’d be able to build a bond with an adult cat like I could with a kitten. Man, is that the furthest thing from the truth!
I originally went to the shelter with another cat in mind; however, I walked into the cat community room and the second I sat down, Maisie came over and sat in my lap and started purring. She wouldn’t leave me alone! I knew she had chosen me, and I had a feeling she’d be a perfect fit for me and my first cat, Humphrey.
To anyone who’s thinking about adopting an adult cat (or kitten, really): PLEASE don’t be scared of the “what-ifs” that come along with adopting an adult animal. What if they have bad habits? What if they take longer to adjust? What if it’s a bit more difficult to acclimate them to your current furry friends? Those are all valid concerns, but they shouldn’t be an end-all for your adoption journey. Most of the time it just takes a ton of love and patience for an animal to become adjusted, or to be more friendly, or just get used to their new life. It won’t happen overnight, so it’s good that the commitment we’ve made to these animals lasts for a lifetime! Adult cats deserve just as much of a chance as kittens do— they were, too, once kittens looking for a forever home. Be their happy ending.
A funny Maisie story:
She is absolutely adorable and fluffy, but don’t let her looks deceive you. She can be quite feisty at the drop of a hat. Every night I go to bed, she jumps up on the bed and lays down next to her stuffed pig my mom got her (literally a stuffed animal for a baby, but Maisie LOVES it), and is all cute and cuddly. When I finally turn the lights off, she instantly attacks it- fluffy feet kicking away while holding it down with a death grip bite. She does this for about 5 minutes every night, then goes back to cuddling it peacefully and falls asleep. I just think it’s funny that she does this every single night and goes from being so sweet to attacking it to snuggling it again!
