Artist Marjorie Strauss’s exhibition on display at PMHS

Pope Memorial Humane Society is thrilled to announce the newest exhibition of artwork is now being displayed on the Art Wall in the lobby of Pope Memorial Humane Society. The current show, featuring pieces by Marjorie Strauss, will be on display and available for purchase through the end of the year.

Marjorie was drawn to Maine and its rugged beauty and sense of independence in its people. She moved here after college, getting a BFA in painting from Mass College of Art in Boston. Her primary mediums have been pastel and oil, with the subjects ranging from the ocean to landscape and trees to flowers and leaves. Also, she has always done portraits. First in school, then Marjorie had summer stints doing portraits on the sidewalk on Cape Cod. She has also been drawn to doing 3-dimensional work, with clay being a tactile extension of working with pastels. She did the portrait of “Tarzan” after he died — working from a lucky photo she had taken. “He died way too young. He was a very special cat — and he would look at me this way from his perch by the food bowl. Inscrutable but deep!”

Marjorie had “Izzy” for her 19 years; “I witnessed her birth (on my bed!), and I think we bonded in that moment. I’m glad she had a long life. “Paddy” is a friend’s dog — who is still with us, and a true-blue companion. I’m available for pet portrait commissions – and I’m showing examples. I will either take a photo of your pet, or I will consider working from photos you have. I just need to see it before committing. Note: a portion of proceeds (30%) is a donation to Pope Memorial Humane Society.”

Pope Memorial Humane Society is currently open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. We encourage our community to visit the shelter and see Marjorie’s artwork and adoptable animals. If you are interested in exhibiting your work on the PMHS Art Wall, please email art@popehumane.org.

The mission of Pope Memorial Humane Society is to ensure the compassionate care, treatment, and placement of companion animals in transition and enrich the lives of pets and people in our community.
