Kitten Season is Fast Approaching

By the time you read this column, it should be April. In a few short weeks, Pope Memorial Humane Society will host a 10-day-long “drive-thru kitten shower” (a play on the traditional baby shower) to prepare for the fast-approaching newborn kitten season.
The community is invited to donate items to help care for this year’s incoming kittens. The most urgently needed donations are dry kitten chow, KMR powder or liquid kitten milk replacement, wet pate kitten food (no seafood flavors) and sandwich-size and quart-size baggies.
Kitten season typically starts when the weather warms, and intact cats reproduce faster than they do during more frigid temperatures.
Continuing during the spring and summer, it is not uncommon for the shelter’s number of kitten intakes to quadruple at any time during the busy season. Because infant animals require more time and resources than adults, they are typically cared for offsite by volunteer foster families until they are ready for adoption.
Our shelter needs help to make sure our staff and volunteers have everything they need to take care of the animals until they’re ready for adoption. Currently, there are more than 30 kittens in foster homes, and that number will only rise as kitten season gets into full swing.

I’ve written about kitten season, now let me tell you about an adult cat. I was walking the cat wing the other day, and our fantastic cat staff said to me that I needed to meet Fenneko. Off I went to meet her. I immediately fell in love with this sweet torbie that seemed a little hesitant of human touch.
Fenneko (photo above) came into the shelter back in December with an injured paw and a litter of kittens. Her kittens have all been adopted; she is now spayed and ready for a home of her own. Since she is on the shy side, a home that is not super active may be best.
I would ask that you have lots of cozy blankets and warm sunny spots for her to nap in — after all, she deserves five-star treatment; they all do!
