Lost, Found and Looking: Georgia, Arrow, and Microchips

From the desk of Theresa Gargan, Pope Memorial Humane Society’s shelter manager.

One of the most rewarding things about working in an animal shelter is being able to reunite our residents with their families. There is nothing better than watching the reaction when a dog sees his owner waiting in the lobby, or the look on a child’s face when you place their lost kitty in their arms. Sharing these happy moments is good for the soul. Over the years these reunions have become more frequent, especially for the cats, as more animals are microchipped. We microchip all the cats and dogs at our facility, and offer microchipping for owned pets as well. It is the one form of identification they cannot lose, and can make the difference in a loved animal going home or not.

If you would like to give your furry family member a long-lasting gift this year, and yourself some peace of mind, consider bringing them by the shelter for a microchip. Microchips are $25 through the shelter. Set up an appointment by calling (207) 594-2200.

Looking for homes this week, microchipped and ready to go, are Georgia and Arrow.

Georgia is a gorgeous, Redbone Coonhound mix. She is silly, playful and has the perfect “love me” hound eyes. While Georgia does not mind the company of other dogs, she would prefer to have all the attention in her home. She would enjoy going for long walks to explore unfamiliar places and smells.

Arrow is about as handsome as a cat can be. He puts up a serious front, but once Arrow knows you, he becomes a big marshmallow. Arrow came in as a stray and is ready to give it up to become a pampered house cat. If you would like to meet, or get more information about Georgia or Arrow, contact us at (207) 594-2200.

Do you need some last minute holiday gifts for the animal lover in your life? We can help. Recipes to the Rescue, the PMHS cookbook, makes an excellent gift for the foodie in your life. A collection of recipes from the PMHS community, this one-of-a-kind cookbook is available for $20. We also have PMHS ball caps and apparel. Plus, our art wall has wonderful acrylic pour artwork by Anna White for purchase. We have gift certificates available too, in case someone is looking for a special furry someone to add to their family. Or, give a life-saving, life-changing gift by making a donation to the shelter in honor of a loved one and we’ll send them a dog or cat themed ornament letting them know of your kindness. This is a great way to let someone know you care while supporting a cause you both care about-helping homeless animals.

Our wish list this week includes: Paper towels, 30-gallon garbage bags and Temptation Cat Treats.

Arrow, the cat!
