Lost Found and Looking: One Heck of a Miracle Cat Story
From the desk of Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Foster Coordinator Brandi Moore:
Over a year ago, an extremely old and sick Siamese cat named Blue was found as a stray, and brought to Pope Memorial Humane Society. Our medical staff was determined to save him, but it was touch and go for many months.
Finally, we thought he might be healthy enough to go out on what we call either a “medical” or “senior” foster. Unfortunately for Blue, senior cats seeking foster homes at Pope had quite a long queue.
But one day, a friend of the Foster Coordinator reached out about fostering a senior or sick/injured cat for Pope! We had plenty of kitties who fit that bill. However, foster mom Mona, mentioned she had an affinity for Siamese cats. We only had two old Siamese, so Blue was the lucky one chosen to go home with his new foster family!
Blue was settling into his new home for about a week, and was sleeping in bed with Mona, when he suddenly started waking her up at 3 a.m. and would not settle, yet he didn’t seem to want anything when she got up. This went on for another week when he woke her up at 3 a.m., and something was very wrong.
Mona felt horrible and ended up in the emergency room. Her test results came back and she was Type 1 Diabetic with her blood sugar nearing 500. Less than 140 is normal. Blue’s foster mom didn’t even know she was a Type 1 Diabetic!
Now, I’ll admit at first, I was a little skeptical regarding the abilities of Dr. Peter Blue, as he’s now known, to save lives. But after her blood sugar was under control, he never woke Mona up at 3 a.m. again. Made a believer out of me!
Just think, Mona saved Blue’s life by giving him a home and Blue returned the favor by saving hers. What better reason to foster a senior, sick or injured cat than that?
Meatball and Unk are two more senior gentlemen also looking for a foster family.
