Lost, Found and Looking: Programs and services

Often, people think humane society and solely about adopting animals. But do you know Pope Memorial Humane Society has various programs and services available to our community members?
Is there a stray cat hanging around your house? Would you like to trap it so it can be brought to PMHS to be scanned for a microchip and medically cleared? If so, PMHS has a trap rental program. There is no rental charge; instead, we collect a $60-per-trap deposit and return the deposit in full when the trap is returned (with no damage) to us seven days later.
Do you know what to do if your pet is lost? What about if you find a lost dog? An entire section of the PMHS website is devoted to lost pet resources. Additionally, PMHS offers microchipping for $25 per animal and ID tag engraving.
No one should struggle to feed their pet. If you are struggling, PMHS is here to help. Community members in need of pet food support should call the shelter at 207-594-2200 to request food for their pets. You will be asked to provide the number and type of pets needing food and the town in which you reside. Once this information is taken, a time will be set up for you to stop by the shelter and pick up a care package for your pets.
At PMHS, we advocate spaying and neutering pets. In addition to reducing homeless pet overpopulation, spaying or neutering improves the health and wellness of pets, diminishes undesirable behaviors associated with females in heat and overactive male suitors, and ensures there are enough homes for all pets. PMHS offers a spay/neuter assistance voucher to residents in our service area who need financial help in getting their pet(s) “fixed.” Pet owners using the voucher will receive up to $100 in financial assistance toward their pet’s spay/neuter surgery at participating local veterinary hospitals or clinics.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention at least one adoptable pet this week. Mya is one of five (yes, five) husky/shepherd mixes at PMHS. This gorgeous blue-eyed gal is just over 7 years old and looking for a fun-loving home ready for a “howling” good time. Mya will sing you the song of her people and look super cute while doing so.
