Pope Memorial Humane Society Features Artwork by Shannon Nachajko
Pope Memorial Humane Society is thrilled to announce its newest exhibition of artwork, which is now on display on the Art Wall in the shelter’s lobby. The show, featuring pieces by Shannon Nachajko, is on display and available for purchase through October 15th, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Pope Memorial Humane Society.
“Art has always been a hobby of mine. I come from a family of artists and at an early age was “forced” to draw, paint and craft. When you are forced, the work loses its charm, and once I left home I stopped doing all of it. It wasn’t until 2018, when I got very sick and was in recovery that I wanted to do something special for someone. I began to paint and draw again, and remembered that, on my terms, it could be very relaxing and help with stress.
So, many ask why this topic? Why “Sugar Skulls?” I love them for two reasons; it keeps me in touch with my original profession which is Anthropology /Archaeology and it provides a way to honor those that have passed in a way that does not focus on the sadness but on the beautiful parts of their lives.
As a an Archaeologist I have trained not only as an Osteologist, but as a Zooarchaeologist — so bones have been a big part of my life. Through them, they tell stories. Many people think they are creepy or gross, but I’ve learned about past lives and what it was like for these individuals by looking at their bones.
As an Animal Rescuer, I am aware that animals cannot tell us everything we need to know. All we can do is observe, listen and do the best we can for them and make sure the quality of life is there. The Catahoula Leopard Hounds that we work with are the state dogs of Louisiana, which is where I learned about the “Sugar Skulls.” I think they are a beautiful tribute to the animals that we lose. They would never want us to remember with tears but with respect, honor, and happiness. To be able to provide this gift is something that I am honored to do.”
Pope Memorial Humane Society is open Monday through Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm. We encourage our community to visit the shelter and see Shannon’s artwork and all the adoptable animals. If you are interested in exhibiting your work on the PMHS Art Wall, please email art@popehumane.org.
