Animal Admissions
Surrendering your pet is a very difficult decision, and we understand that there are times when keeping a pet is just not possible. If you need assistance and live in one of our contracting towns, we are here to help.
How do I relinquish my pet?
An appointment to relinquish your pet is requested so we are better prepared for your animal’s arrival. We ask for these appointments so that we can better manage our shelter population, avoid overcrowding, and ensure we are appropriately resourced to meet the needs of the animals we are committed to serve. We understand that emergency situations occur and will do our best to accommodate them.
To begin the process, please contact the shelter at (207) 594-2200 to set up an appointment.
You will be asked to fill out a relinquishment form and sign a legal release of ownership. Please bring whatever written information you have about your pet including vaccination and medical records, previous adoption paperwork, etc. Other helpful information may include a brief biography including details about their personality, habits and demeanor. The more we know about your pet, the better decisions we can make about their care and future.
Please make sure that your animal is on a leash or in a carrier.
Please feel free to bring any favorite toys, bedding, etc. to make the transition easier for your pet.
Is there a fee to relinquish my pet?
While our relinquishment fees likely won’t cover the full cost of care for your pet, they will help provide us the necessary resources to keep your pet safe and healthy while we search for a new, loving family.
- Dogs: $25
- Cats: $25
- Rabbits: $25
- Other small animals: $10
If you are facing financial hardship, contact a staff member; these fees may, in certain circumstances, be waived.
