Riley and Clover Bring Light to the Dark
This week’s Lost, Found and Looking column is from the desk of Pope Memorial Humane Society’s Shelter Manager, Theresa Gargan.
Sometimes, here at the shelter, we get in an animal that just brings out the best in everyone.
Riley is a tiny Chihuahua mix that recently came to us with serious neurological symptoms. She is unsteady on her feet, cannot see and has very little hearing. But the minute she feels your hand touch her she becomes a wagging little wiggle butt. This girl has so much joy in spite of her challenges and we want to help make her life the best it can be.
The next step for Riley will be a visit to the neurologist in Portland to see if they can find out what may have caused her condition and whether there is anything we can do to improve it.
Meanwhile, she is being pampered, petted and plied with yummy food and treats. We think Riley is going to make a wonderful addition to some lucky family. Her loving spirit is a true lesson in resilience and positivity. As with so many of our special cases, Riley is able to get the care she needs because of our loyal supporters.
If you would like to donate to defer her medical expenses you can do so through popehumane.org or at P.O. Box 1294, Rockland ME 04841.
Our special kitty this week is Clover (at right). This beautiful girl came to us a shy, semi-feral kitten. Being born outdoors, she had no contact with humans and no reason to trust them.
Of course, she had not met our staff member Lauren yet. Lauren took this little fuzzball home with her for some family socialization time. Clover met other cats, dogs and children and learned humans aren’t so bad after all. She was mainly raised by her 10-year-old daughter, Ashlyn and her old man barn cat, Flash.
She is still a bit timid but loves to be picked up and cuddled and is easily motivated by treats. If you would like to meet this lovely young lady or would like more information about her, call at 594-2200.
Our wish list this week includes paper towels, bleach, Windex refills and 13-gallon trash bags.
Thank you for your support!
