How to Foster
As part of our Foster Care Program, volunteers provide safe and nurturing home environments.
Why Foster?
Foster pets make excellent house guests! They’re just happy to be out of the shelter and in a home. They don’t care one bit if there are whoopie pie crumbs between your couch cushions. (In fact, they might consider that to be an extra perk!)
Fostering a pet does not require that you have loads of free time or advanced training skills. Dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, (and once in a while, even small animals) are all in need of foster homes. Pregnant cats and kittens are some of the most at-risk animals at the shelter, so providing foster homes for them is critical to keeping them both mentally and physically healthy.
Some benefits of fostering:
- Having an animal companion without a lifetime commitment
- Helping an animal recover from an illness or injury
- Giving extra TLC to puppies and kittens too young to be adopted or providing a safe, comfy place for moms to give birth and raise their babies
- Helping animals decompress from the stress of living at the shelter
- Knowing that you’ve saved a life and given an animal a second chance
Responsibilities of fostering:
- Providing a safe, clean, and caring environment
- Monitoring for physical and mental well-being
- Providing food, water, litter, toys/enrichment, and shelter
- Administering necessary medical care for a sick or injured animal
- Providing exercise and socialization if appropriate
- If you have pets already, they must be current on vaccinations and preferably spayed or neutered. If not, please speak to our staff.
